Patchwork City

Dundee (UK) 2024

Master of Architecture (Hons) with Urban Planning, University of Dundee, UK

MArch(Hons) with Urban Planning (ARB/ RIBA/ RTPI) students investigated the challenges for urban communities responding to contemporary global issues through development of a joint strategy for Dundee City Centre, the ‘Patchwork City,’ within which individual proposals gave the opportunity to develop more detailed design projects.

Analysis of the city centre was undertaken while simultaneously investigating the idea and purpose of an urban room in response to The Farrell Review’s identification of the need for a space where people can come together to connect and influence future development of their urban environment. A taxonomy of urban rooms was created, from Geddes’s Outlook Tower to the Farrell Centre, comparing criteria including form, purpose, location, funding and permanence.

An integral part of the research process was creating and running an urban room. The students collaborated with Creative Dundee’s Hapworks team to secure a vacant retail unit, using the weekend event to engage with the city’s residents to better understand their concerns and ambitions for the city. The event took the form of a participatory exhibition, and the resulting conversations, drawings, models and comments were integral to development of the students’ design research projects which test ways to support the city’s future sustainability.

Research questions: How can the co-production of urban knowledge between students, academic staff, community organisations and residents be structured to produce outcomes that are meaningful both as design research and to contribute to real change?
How can collaborative processes support student preparation for the complexities of professional practice through real-life experience?
