Valmiera (Latvia) 2021
International summer school of the ephemeral architecture and urban design “FestivaL’and 4.0” is organized in cooperation with Valmiera Summer Theatre Festival and as an experimental urban laboratory, it has become a much-anticipated event of the festival program. The summer school is an extracurricular activity for students to gain crucial design experience and acquire practical skills in timber construction crafts.
The participants of the summer school in 2021 developed ideas for the pop-up festival hub in the building and the site of the former boiler house in Valmiera. “Temporary Museum of Incidental Traces Through the Eyes of Another” was a conceptual indoor gallery that traced, highlighted, and framed a distinctive collection of spatial elements, artifacts, and incidences of industrial space. The visitors became part of the exhibit leaving their current notes on the cardboard canvas. The modular walling system of indoor installation was complemented by the outdoor structures that served as the backdrop for the stage with several functional exterior props. As a unifying tectonic assembly, a prefabricated wooden modular framework with multiple alignment capabilities was designed, with reference to Gustavs Klucis’s work and the structural explorations of constructivists.
