Crush Up. Recycling of the Institute’s own waste, Berlin (Germany) 2022

Technische Universität Berlin, Germany

The construction industry is one of the largest producers of environmentally harmful C02 emissions in the world. Since we as teachers need to sensitise future generations of architects to this issue, we would like to show ways of planning sustainably and environmentally consciously already during our studies. Change starts on a small scale, so that’s where we want to start.

Drawn ideas on metre-long sketch rolls, mountains of volume studies made of cardboard and numerous presentation models find their way into the dumpster at the end of the semester. We believe in the potential of these otherwise unused resources and we would like to develop a process for recycling our own waste, which accumulates at the Institut für Architektur TU Berlin every semester.
The goal is to explore the possibilities of shredding various wastes in order to use them as raw materials for building new prototypes.

The project concludes with the assembly of a 6.00 meter diameter hemispherical pavilion composed of 225 components where 98% of the mass is upcycled material produced by the Institut für Architektur TU Berlin.
